German website FilmPortal has reportedly leaked details on Return to Silent Hill, which for those who haven’t been keeping up is the third entry in the Silent Hill movie franchise and the second to involve Christophe Gans.
Beware, there’s spoilers for Silent Hill 2 for those who haven’t played yet, and with the Silent Hill 2 Remake coming up, you may want to avoid them.
While it’s the third movie, it appears that this will be a reboot and have no relation to Silent Hill or Silent Hill Revelation 3D. Gans previously indicated that the movie will be based on the fan-favourite Silent Hill 2, but it appears there are some changes being made according to the leaked synopsis.
Driven by the shadows of his past, James Sunderland returns to Silent Hill to find his lost love Mary Crane. But the dark, oppressive small town is no longer the place from his memories. He meets figures who seem all too familiar to him and who try to dissuade him from his search for Mary. The longer he searches for Mary, the more he begins to wonder if this is still the reality – or if he has fallen into the dark underworld of Jacob Crane.
Silent Hill 2 featured James Sunderland coming to the foggy town, although in the game he’s there after receiving a letter from his deceased wife, Mary. Jacob Crane isn’t featured in the game or series lore at all, so it sounds like he’s an original character designed for the movie.
The synopsis implies that Mary isn’t James’ wife in the film universe either, so that’s obviously a change, but the basic outline seems quite similar. There’s James, Mary, Silent Hill; as long as we have some iconic monsters and other familiar characters (Angela, Eddie and Laura) we could still have a solid adaptation of the seminal survival horror title.
Return to Silent Hill has yet to attract a cinematic release date, while Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2 Remake is currently in development for PS5 and PC.
