NEW YORK (PRWEB)

Global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP was named Entertainment Law Firm of the Year at the 2023 Benchmark Litigation US Awards event in New York on March 15. The awards recognize the country’s most distinguished litigators and their firms for their exemplary work over the past 12 months. Shareholder Mathew S. Rosengart, who was shortlisted for Entertainment Litigator of the Year, accepted the award on behalf of the firm.
Greenberg Traurig’s Media & Entertainment Litigation Practice received international acclaim over the past year when Rosengart obtained a court-ordered suspension of Britney Spears’ father as conservator, leading to the termination of the superstar’s 13-year conservatorship, while also defeating Mr. Spears’ many efforts to take her deposition. As a result of Rosengart’s tenacious representation, Britney lauded him as her “amazing attorney who helped change my life!!!!” and posted a photo of them together above the caption: “This man has turned my life around. Thank you for being so kind and respectful to me always. I simply adore you.” Rosengart’s other recent notable representations involved his clients Sean Penn, Keanu Reeves, Steven Spielberg, and Lena Dunham.
Also over the past year, Vincent H. Chieffo, co-chair of Greenberg Traurig’s Media & Entertainment Practice, successfully represented popstar Katy Perry in a landmark appeal affirming that no reasonable jury could have concluded that Perry’s hit song “Dark Horse” infringed the plaintiff’s song “Joyful Noise” because the similarities of two eight-note “repeating musical figures” that occur in both songs were unprotectible and conventional arrangements of musical building blocks.
In addition, Michael J. Grygiel, co-chair of Greenberg Traurig’s Media & Entertainment Litigation Practice, secured a victory for leading daily newspaper publisher Gannett Co., Inc. in a high-profile defamation suit brought by plaintiff Nicholas Sandmann claiming Gannett mischaracterized his conduct towards a Native American activist at a 2019 rally. He also obtained dismissal of a complaint filed against comedian Kathy Griffin alleging a variety of torts including defamation related to the same rally.
“We are honored by this recognition of our practice, which represents entities and individuals in the entertainment and media space in some of their most critical litigation matters,” said Chieffo and Grygiel in a joint statement. “In all that we do, providing an exceptional client service experience is our first priority.”
Also in Benchmark’s prestigious 2023 awards series, Greenberg Traurig Chair and Co-Chair of the firm’s Global Litigation Practice and Trial Practice Lori G. Cohen was shortlisted for Product Liability Lawyer of the Year and Greenberg Traurig was shortlisted for Product Liability Law Firm of the Year. In addition, Greenberg Traurig was shortlisted for Law Firm of the Year in Florida, Georgia, and New Jersey.
