When it comes to their opinions of Disney’s Peter Pan & Wendy, audiences, and critics are as divided as the Lost Boys and Pirates.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, the “official” critics graded the “corrected” live-action remake at 64%, but thousands of audience members grilled it, giving it a 14%. And this film is only the latest example of a growing dissonance between what the movie establishment thinks should be shown and what audiences want to see.
While still divided, many critics still praised the film.
Jennifer Green from Common Sense Media said, “The Disney brand will bring broad audiences to Peter Pan & Wendy, but they might be surprised by the broody aesthetic and contemplative messages of Lowery’s adaptation, not to mention its alternate ending.”
Noel Murray from The Los Angeles Times said, “The movie is entertaining and has a professional polish; but it’s also very safe.”
Wenlei Ma from News.com.au, said, “David Lowery has mounted a film that is very much grown up.”

Meanwhile, audience members did not uphold such reservations.
Frank B wrote, “1.5 hours of lecturing. If you want a diverse, fun, light, enjoyable fantasy film with strong characters, I recommend the dungeons and dragons movie.”
Mike G said, “Yet another movie where it is forced, and the writing was a badly executed college thesis on DEI, but with a crazy high budget. There wasn’t anything about this that was celebrating the original universe, any better or even as good as, past efforts. Just another DEI forced package of nonsense, intended to scold “cis-normative evil” into ‘doing better.’” DEI refers to the corporate push for “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.”
Rebecca E said, “This movie has no respect for its source material and especially for mothers out there. This movie felt like it was made by high schoolers who were given the task of making a movie with a billion dollars. No charm whatsoever.”
Review: Disney Made the Anti-Peter Pan Movie
While admittedly visually stunning, the grunge-glazed remake twisted the Walt Disney Animation Studios’ original adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s beloved stageplay, breaking several crucial traditions–especially regarding Captain Hook (Jude Law), Tinker Bell (Yara Shahidi), and Tiger Lily (Alyssa Wapanatahk)–and appearing to appease the fan theory that Peter Pan is the real villain of the story all along.
For readers who would like to make up their own mind, Peter Pan & Wendy is available for streaming now on Disney+.
