Twisters recently wrapped up production, and according to actor Glen Powell, this is no reboot of the classic 1996 film but its own force of reckoning. Powell said he’s been working on a new film that’s a new chapter to the classic 1996 film Twister coming out next year. The star said filming wrapped up a few nights ago, and it’s certainly not a reboot nor a recreation. Twisters won’t feature any of the characters or cast from the original film but instead tells another tale of tornado terrors through a modern-day lens. “We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one,” said Powell in an interview with Vogue . “It’s a completely original story.” Disaster movies are a treasure trove for adrenaline junkies who don’t want to leave the comforts of home. Tornados have been a feared force of nature for centuries and have captured audience attention since The Wizard of Oz took Dorothy on an impromptu adventure to more recent franchise hits like Sharknado . The original Twister film debuted in 1989, an unrelated comedy starring Suzy Amis, Crispin Glover, and Harry Dean Stanton. Twister, starring Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, and Cary Elwes, hit theaters in 1996 in what is arguably the most elaborate Dodge Ram commercial ever produced. However, the new movie isn’t a reboot or a remake of these films but aims to capture this unstoppable force of nature. And the title Twisters implies storms could team up to terrorize a new cast of characters. The 1996 film shocked audiences with its star-studded cast and the intense visual effects. The film brought the work of NOAAS’s National Severe Storms Laboratory to life, showing the dangerous conditions storm chasers and scientists go through to collect weather data via TOTO, the TOtable Tornado Observatory, known as Dorothy in Twister . Twisters is directed by Lee Isaac Chung and stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Anthony Ramos, Katy M. O’Brian, Glen Powell, Kiernan Shipka, and Maura Tierney. It’s written by Michael Crichton and Mark L. Smith. Although the 1996 Twister is only available through streaming platforms, like Prime Video, as an additional charge, the 1989 film is available to stream for free on Tubi. Twisters is expected to hit theaters on July 19, 2024.
