In our Golden Age of entertainment, the gluttony of options is overwhelming. Here’s what we’re watching in April 2023.
Spring has sprung, and your streaming options are already in full bloom. Before you fill your soon-to-be warmer weekends with outdoor adventures, knock some cinematic masterpieces off your must-see list. And in case you don’t have one, we made one for you. Here are the new TV shows and movies to watch on Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, Disney+, and more in April 2023.
What to Watch on Netflix: April 2023
In the dark comedy Beef (April 6), a road rage incident between two people expands into something much bigger, taking over the lives of Danny (Steven Yuen) and Amy (Ali Wong). After the two interact, they can’t leave things be, with the two going head-to-head to try and ruin each other’s lives and mess with their relationships. If you’re in the mood for some political drama, Americans star Keri Russell takes center stage in The Diplomat (April 20). She plays a diplomat who’s thrust into an international crisis she’s not fully prepared for, but has no choice but to step into the fold to try and solve it.
After airing on AMC last year, the sixth and final season of Better Call Saul will hit Netflix April 18, closing the book on Saul Goodman and the Breaking Bad spinoff. Bob Odenkirk gives an Emmy-worthy performance alongside cast members Rhea Seahorn, Jonathan Banks, and Giancarlo Esposito as the season follows what happens to Saul as he goes toe-to-toe with Lalo Salamanca (Tony Dalton)—and his fate in the aftermath of the Breaking Bad timeline in the future.
This month also includes the second season of Sweet Tooth (April 27), as well as the action drama Florida Man, which stars Edgar Ramirez as an ex-cop who has to solve a case involving a mobster’s missing girlfriend when he returns home to the Sunshine State. If you need some extra nostalgia, look no further than Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always reunion special, which brings back original 90s stars Walter Jones, David Yost, Catherine Sutherland, and Steve Cardenas.
What to Watch on HBO Max: April 2023
Bill Hader returns in the fourth and final season of Barry, the dark, Hollywood-set comedy about a hit man who finds solace in acting. The cliffhanger of last season found Barry finally caught by authorities for the murder of the girlfriend of his mentor, Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler). The season starts with Barry behind bars—but how long will he stay in prison?
If you’ve never seen the original Clone High (April 14), now’s the perfect time to catch up before the new season premieres. The show first debuted in 2002, and now those 13 episodes will start streaming ahead of a second season. The original storyline followed a secret military project that created the clones of famous historical figures—including Abe Lincoln, Cleopatra, Joan of Arc, and JFK—and put them in high school. Many of the same characters and voice actors will be returning for the show, including Will Forte, Nicole Sullivan, and co-creator Chris Miller. The show has already received a pickup for a third season as well.
If true crime is your jam, the limited series Love & Death premieres on April 27, following the true story of Candy Montgomery. Played by WandaVision star Elizabeth Olsen, the story follows the unraveling of a small town housewife into a killer following Montgomery’s brutal murder of a friend. The show stars Jesse Plemons, Lily Rabe, Elizabeth Marvel, and Krysten Ritter. This month also includes the new season of the heartwarming comedy Somebody Somewhere (April 23), and the final season of the superhero series Titans (April 13). Season 4 of Succession continues, and if you haven’t been tuning in, it’s binge time. The show has been critically acclaimed once again as the Roy family fights for the keys to patriarch Logan Roy’s (Brian Cox) media empire.
What to Watch on Disney Plus: April 2023
After coming to theaters earlier this year, the latest live-action adaptation Peter Pan & Wendy will be hitting the platform on April 28. The film follows the traditional story of Wendy (Ever Anderson), a young girl who visits Neverland and has adventures with Peter Pan (Alexander Moloney) and Tinker Bell (Yara Shahidi). Director David Lowery, however, puts a new spin on much of the characters, including Captain Hook (Jude Law). This month also includes Rennervations (April 12), which follows actor Jeremy Renner as he works alongside experts in different fields to recreate vehicles and other technology from old, decommissioned pieces to provide for kids in communities around the world.
Season 3 of The Mandalorian continues as well, following Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his group of masked warriors as they try to retake their home planet of Mandalore. This season has gotten bigger with the Star Wars lore and digging into the history and myths of the Mandalorian people, setting up for an even bigger galactic story ahead.
What to Watch on Amazon Prime: April 2023
Amazon is going worldwide this month with Citadel (April 28), a big budget action thriller from Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo. The show is one of the biggest rollouts for Amazon, as the company is already working to make spinoffs in other countries that connect back to the main series. The show follows Mason Kane (Richard Madden) and Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra Jonas), two spies who were part of a top agency called Citadel who’ve now had their memories wiped away. When a new enemy enters the picture, they must find a way to regain their memories and take down a villainous syndicate. The six-episode first season also stars Stanley Tucci, Lesley Manville, and Ashleigh Cummings in supporting roles.
You’ll get double the amount of Rachel Weisz this month in the new miniseries Dead Ringers (April 21), a psychological thriller that’s based on the David Cronenberg movie of the same name. The show stars Weisz as both Elliot and Beverly mantle, identical twin gynecologists who share everything with each other, including pushing the boundaries of their medical practice. If you’re looking for something a little lighter, Ticket to Paradise, the romantic comedy from last year starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts, will hit the platform on April 11. The film follows a divorced couple (Clooney and Roberts), as they travel to sabotage the upcoming wedding of their daughter in Bali, because she wants to stay there and give up a potential lucrative law career. The comedy earned positive reviews and made over $100 million at the box office in 2022. On the action side, you can catch the series Gangs of Lagos (April 7), a gritty crime drama from Nigeria that has some amazing stunt work.
What to Watch on Apple TV+: April 2023
Get ready to party again: Season 2 of the comedy series The Afterparty is back. What started off as a one season show has expanded after a great reception to the first season, which followed a group of friends after someone is murdered during their high school reunion (yes, this is a comedy). The new season will take place at a wedding, with a few characters returning from the first season—including the ones played by Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson, and Zoë Chao. In this new season, Aniq (Richardson) and Zoë (Chao) are attending a wedding when another murder happens and they team up with Detective Danner (Tiffany Haddish) to solve it.
In the adaptation of the best-selling book The Last Thing He Told Me (April 14), Jennifer Garner stars as a women who finds her husband has vanished after an embezzlement investigation, leaving behind a mystery of why he left and many secrets about who he really was and what he’s been doing.
In something lighter for the family, Jane (April 14) is an adventure series that follows a young girl who works to help animals around the world, just like her idol, Dr. Jane Goodall. Drops of God (April 21) is an international series set in the world of very expensive wine. It follows Camille (Fleur Geffrier), who travels to Tokyo after her estranged father dies and finds that he has left her an incredible wine collection. The twist is that she has to compete with a wine expert, Issei Tomine (Tomohisa Yamashita), to get it—and she knows nothing about wine.
What to Watch on Hulu: April 2023
This month, Hulu releases the new series Tiny Beautiful Things (April 7), which stars Kathyrn Hahn (WandaVision) as real-life author Cheryl Strayed. Previously played by Reese Witherspoon in the film Wild, the series follows the author and adapts some of the stories she encountered during her time when she was writing an anonymous advice column. The narrative will jump back to her younger years and the present, connecting the two through an emotional through line of lessons learned and how she’s grown over the years. Season 3 of the comedy series Dave (April 6) will be on Hulu through FX, bringing back the hilarious adventures of rapper Lil Dicky and his group of friends. If you’ve been missing the crew that brought you Super Troopers and Beerfest, the Broken Lizard guys are back with Quasi (April 20), this time a medieval story that satirizes the Hunchback of Notre Dame story. This one follows a hunchback trying to find love who ends up in the middle of a battle between the Pope and the king of France—and we’re sure it’ll be as ridiculous as the other Broken Lizard group movies.
