Ángel Manuel Soto isn’t slowing down anytime soon. The Blue Beetle director already has his next feature film lined up, and it stars two actors who know a thing or two about the action genre.
While there isn’t much information on the film, Wrecking Crew, it is described by TheWrap as a “buddy action movie” starring Jason Momoa (Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom) and Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3).
According to TheWrap, MGM is backing the project with a script from Jonathan Tropper, the creator of Cinemax’s martial arts crime drama, Warrior. Both Momoa and Bautista were in talks to star in the movie before the Hollywood strike began.
This past weekend, Soto’s Blue Beetle knocked Barbie off its pink pedestal to take the No. 1 spot at the box office after a month of Barbie domination. Although considered a soft opening for a DC Comics movie, Blue Beetle reeled in an estimated $25.4 million.
“We wanted to see our history and our legacy on the big screen, in a way that is respectful,” Soto told The Hollywood Reporter. “That was an opportunity that we didn’t want to miss.”
The combination of Momoa and Bautista in one movie seemed to excite fans online when news broke Monday (August 21). “A buddy comedy with Bautista and Momoa?!” one social media user wrote. “Unhinged in all the funnest ways. Sign me up!”

As much of a draw as Momoa and Bautista are, Blue Beetle fans were happy to see that Soto found his next project so quickly.

Here’s hoping a Blue Beetle sequel is somewhere down the pipeline.
This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, Blue Beetle being covered here wouldn’t exist.
