BLACKPINK‘s Jennie recently sat down with English singer-songwriter Dua Lipa to discuss her career on the Dua Lip: At Your Service podcast.
Jennie discussed several topics, including talking about her days as a trainee. During one portion of the interview, the BLACKPINK member mentioned that while she was a trainee, her label wanted them to not only be able to sing in Korean but have them cover many pop songs as well.
The variety of different vocal styles that we got to experience was definitely something that helped me throughout the way. The good thing about the label I was under was not only that they wanted us to sing in Korean but we would cover so many pop songs as a trainee so by the time we had to record our actual song for BLACKPINK we were able to play around the language, the rhythm, all sorts of things that effect the music with the cultural difference.

While this is an interesting piece of new information, fans couldn’t help but notice the star seemingly referred to YG Entertainment as “the label she was under.”
It was recently reported that contract negotiations are underway between BLACKPINK and YG, so many fans took this as an indication that Jennie would leave YG Entertainment.

While her statement could be understood this way, others also pointed out that she could simply be talking in the past tense. Fans also mentioned that YG Entertainment has subsidiary labels trainees sometimes train under, though this might not be the case in Jennie’s situation.
everyone overanalysing Jennie saying ‘was’ when she just said it bc she’s speaking In past tense about her trainee days jdjd

She was talking about her past days as a trainee and that’s how you address in past tense, stop making everything look so dramatic when it’s not. Post the whole context!
ALWAYS WITH YOU JENNIE https://t.co/wREjB7a322

Jennie, nor any other member of BLACKPINK, have made official statements on their contract renewal status. Once decisions have been made, the news will likely come through news channels with announcements from YG Entertainment.
