The latest trailer for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire hints that ghostly threats from the past are about to resurface in the Big Apple. Sony debuted the final trailer for the new Ghostbusters installment which expands on the team’s newest threat Garraka, a supernatural being with the power to scare people to death. As the presence of the new big bad creates a “death chill” across Manhattan, the iconic Hook and Ladder firehouse becomes its next target and it looks like the old containment unit holding every ghost from the franchise is about to combust. Gil Kenan takes over directing duties from co-writer Jason Reitman who helmed the previous movie Ghostbusters: Afterlife in 2021. Where Reitman’s Afterlife relaunched the ’80s comedy franchise as a Stranger Things-inspired small-town adventure story, Kenan takes his cues from 1984’s Ghostbusters and 1989’s Ghostbusters II for Frozen Empire’s epic return to New York City. “Not a day went by when I didn’t ask myself, ‘How would Ivan [Reitman, who directed Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II] handle this?’” Kenan said. “I wanted that same approach to character, comedy, and scares he had on the first two Ghostbusters. This one feels more connected to those movies than Afterlife was.” What happens in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire? The official synopsis reads: “In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all started — the iconic New York City firehouse — to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.” Directed by Gil Kenan, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire stars Carrie Coon, Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, and Paul Rudd reprising their roles from 2021’s Afterlife. Additionally, original Ghostbusters stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and William Atherton. Newcomers to the franchise include Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, and James Acaster. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire hits cinemas on March 22.
