The dark comedy was based on the board game of the same name and featured an incredible ensemble cast, including the likes of Madeline Kahn, Eileen Brennan, Tim Curry, and Christopher Lloyd. It garnered a cult following in the years since its release, largely thanks to being a cable mainstay. Attempts to remake the film have been happening for over a decade. In 2009, Universal wanted to make a new film version of the game with director Gore Verbinski at the helm. Universal would eventually drop out, but the efforts would continue with Verbinski and Hasbro. 20th Century Fox began developing a new version of the film in 2016, eventually finding a big star to attach to the project. Ryan Reynolds entered into a deal with Fox in 2018. Reynolds was set to star in the Clue remake, bringing in Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Jason Bateman was eventually brought in to direct the film (more on him in a minute), followed by James Bobin. Oren Uziel was brought in to rewrite the movie in 2022, but now it appears that version of the film is dead. Variety is reporting that Hasbro has struck a deal with Sony to develop film and TV shows based on the board game. Hasbro Heads of Film and TV Zev Foreman and Gabriel Marano said, “Sony is the perfect partner to adapt a property as culturally impactful and mystery-defining as Clue. Nicole Brown, Katherine Pope, and their teams are tremendous creative collaborators and ideal partners to help us figure out after 75 years if it was Colonel Mustard in the conservatory with the candlestick.” Time will tell if any adaptations see the light of day from this agreement. Clue seems to be a nut that studios can’t crack; at least not when they are trying to. A film that feels like a spiritual successor to the hit film exists. It is called Game Night and stars Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams.
