Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie is still happening.
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Waititi provided an update on the untitled Star Wars movie he’s been working on for Lucasfilm over the past several years.
“At the moment, I’m still developing something with them,” Waititi said. “Like me, they have a lot of projects going on. I think they’re gonna push it until I finish these other projects. I’ve got about four other scripts that I’m trying to finish. My thing is I want to take my time with that and get it right. I don’t want to rush this movie.”
Speaking with Business Insider, Waititi further said his Star Wars movie is “still marinating” and that he’s “been writing it.”
What do we know about Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie?
Earlier this year, scooper Daniel Richtman (aka DanielRPK) claimed Waititi’s Star Wars movie, which was initially announced in May 2020, was “officially dead.” Jeff Sneider of The Hot Mic disputed these claims in September 2023, saying the project is “not dead” and that “a draft is expected.”
In May 2023, Deadline reported that Waititi’s Star Wars movie will likely begin filming in 2024. Variety also reported in March 2023 that Waititi will “most likely have a part in [the movie] as well.”
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy told Variety about the project in April 2023, “Taika is still working away. He’s writing the script himself. He doesn’t really want to bring others into that process and I don’t blame him. He has a very, very unique voice. So we want to protect that and that’s what he’s doing. But we’re going to make that one day.”
Along with providing the voice of The Mandalorian‘s IG-11, Waititi is known for directing 2014’s What We Do in the Shadows, 2016’s Hunt for the Wilderpeople, 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, 2019’s Dojo Rabbit, and 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder. His latest, the Michael Fassbender-starring Next Goal Wins, opens in United States theaters on November 17, 2023.
