It’s been two years since the most recent movie in The Conjuring Universe – 2021’s The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, but that dry streak comes to an end later this year with The Nun 2, a sequel to the spinoff hit from 2018. Despite the poor critical reception, Corin Hardy’s The Nun was a MASSIVE box office hit, scaring up a whopping $365 million in theaters.
In fact, The Nun is actually the highest grossing film in the entire Conjuring Universe to date, and yes that includes the two core The Conjuring movies directed by James Wan!
It was only natural that Valak the demonic nun would return in a sequel, and indeed The Nun 2 is currently slated for theatrical release on September 8, 2023, a full five years after Valak dominated the box office in her first solo movie. This time around, Michael Chaves (Curse of La Llorona, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It) is taking over as director.
Bonnie Aarons will be reprising the role of Valak in The Nun 2, and we recently learned that The Nun co-star Taissa Farmiga will also be back as her adversary, Sister Irene.
The cast for the upcoming sequel also includes Storm Reid (“Euphoria”) alongside Anna Popplewell (The Chronicles of Narnia franchise) and Katelyn Rose Downey (Clean Sweep).
The plot synopsis for The Nun 2, you ask? Here’s what we know so far…
“1956 – France. A priest is murdered. An evil is spreading. The sequel to the worldwide smash hit THE NUN follows SISTER IRENE as she once again comes face to face with the demonic force VALAK – THE DEMON NUN.”
For the sake of context, the first movie took place in 1952 Romania, and it ends with Sister Irene banishing Valak. The fight will continue, it seems, just a few short years later.
James Wan is once again producing The Nun‘s sequel, but perhaps the coolest bit about this one is that it was written by Akela Cooper, who has become a bit of a horror hero in her own right in the past couple years. Akela Cooper, coming off several years of writing for television, wrote both 2021’s Malignant and this year’s M3GAN, two fan favorite horror movies.
Akela Cooper wrote the script for The Nun 2 alongside Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing, from a story by James Wan and Akela Cooper. Cause for excitement? Most definitely.
The Nun 2 wrapped filming in France late last year, and with the September 2023 release date approaching, we expect the marketing campaign will begin in the coming months.
Stay tuned for more on all things The Nun 2 as we learn it.
