I’m one of those people who always Googles singers and bands that I like, just to get a little backstory on who they are and where they come from. When I first discovered For King & Country, I popped their name into the search bar and proceeded to read about how Joel and Luke Smallbone were from Australia and had come to America as kids. The snippet I found pretty much left it at that. Talk about an understatement! Unsung Hero is not actually focused on Joel and Luke, but on the entire Smallbone family, with special emphasis on two of the women in the family, their mother (Helen) and their sister (Rebecca). Their father (David) also plays a significant role in the story. To say that “the family came from Australia” leaves out so much of the story that clearly has impacted and defined this inspirational family. Even the official synopsis of the movie, which I’ll include below, doesn’t even begin to hint at the challenges and road bumps that the Smallbone family faced, both before they left Australia an once they arrived in America. The story of their faith and commitment to family during those difficult times are an absolute inspiration, and one that many need to hear as so many face their own career and financial hardships during these present difficult times. Unsung Hero Synopsis When David Smallbone’s successful music company collapses, he moves his family from Australia to the United States in search of a brighter future. With nothing more than their six children, their suitcases, and their love of music, David (for KING + COUNTRY’s Joel Smallbone) and his pregnant wife Helen (Daisy Betts) set out to rebuild their lives from the ground up. Based on a remarkable true story, a mum’s faith stands against all odds; and inspires her husband and children to hold onto theirs. A Great Family Movie If you are looking for an inspiring and uplifting movie that the whole family can enjoy, don’t hesitate to grab tickets to Unsung Hero! You don’t have to be fans of Rebecca St. James or For King & Country to enjoy the film (although you might become fans by the end of it!!). Some Cool Things About the Movie Joel Smallbone actually plays his own father, David, in the movie. Most of the other family members show up in small cameos throughout the film. Stay to the very end and you will see who they play in a short follow-up segment. You will recognize some other familiar faces throughout the movie as well including Candace Cameron Bure (Full House), Lucas Black (Birthright Outlaw), Jonathan Jackson (Nashville), Don Most (Happy Days) and Terry O’Quinn (Lost). Buy tickets today to see Unsung Hero in theaters starting April 26th! Many thanks to Kingdom Faith Marketing Services, LLC for providing an advanced screening of the movie for this review.
