The Kentucky vs. Louisville football game is a heated affair for many families across the Bluegrass. If you’re unable to be at — searches for Louisville’s new stadium name — L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 25 for the Cats vs. the Cards, there’s another viewing option available. The Governor’s Cup is one of 75 college football games that will be shown at movie theaters this season as part of a partnership between ESPN and the Theater Sports Network.
ACC games that air on ESPN platforms are available for Theater Sports Network distribution in the away team markets, or in both home and away markets for neutral site games. So, Kentucky vs. Louisville on the Saturday after Thanksgiving will air in theaters in or around the city of Louisville, giving the BBN and Card Nation an unexpected new battleground.
Details, including which theaters will participate and ticket prices, are forthcoming. The agreement also includes the New Year’s Six Bowl games including the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic, the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl, the Capital One Orange Bowl, the CFP Semifinal at the Allstate Sugar Bowl, the CFP Semifinal at the Rose Bowl Game, and the College Football Playoff National Championship. A complete list of games is available on the Theater Sports Network’s website. Nine Louisville games will be shown, starting in Week 4 vs. Boston College, so we should know which theaters participate soon enough.
Rivalry, with a side of popcorn?
Who will watch college football games in movie theaters? Families, hopes Jason Brenek, the CEO of MetaMedia, Theater Sports Network’s live-streaming distribution partner.
“We believe that Theater Sports Network has identified an unmet demand for families and fans to view live sports on massive movie theater screens and are thrilled to be selected as their distribution technology partner,” Brenek said in the release.
It’s an interesting concept. While movie popcorn is undeniably delicious and being able to see the Cats throw Ls Down on the big screen would be pretty sweet, I’m not sure I’d want to watch a game of this magnitude with a bunch of strangers, particularly if several are cheering for the other team. That happens all the time at bars, but how would it translate to a movie theater? Popcorn fights? Is cheering allowed or are you going to be shushed?
