Selma knew that Muuto’s Linear Steel Table would soon be released in a vibrant blue and she knew it’d be a perfect fit for her developing outdoor project. “I had been really excited about this blue color for a long time,” she says. “The combination of color is pretty important. I really enjoyed the surface of these clay tiles and the pattern they make, and the lines reference my interest in composition and graphic shapes. This combination of wood and steel and blades, I think it’s very interesting.”
How and when?
It all came together in early 2022. With enough bricks collected to complete the courtyard area and the blue table set ready, Selma was able to realize her vision, combining the two to create a striking oasis in the middle of the lush greenery of her backyard. With two young children, she was also focused on practicality and durability, making the combination of brick and steel even more appealing. Now that the courtyard has been finished for a year, Selma has seen it in every season, and she loves observing the way the surrounding color palette changes over the course of time.

Why?
Selma’s workspace.
Selma believes that selecting a product should be an experience, so she leans into storytelling in her work as an art director. She especially loves creating a story around tactile materials. “Wood, textiles, clay…I stage the products in the right setting and choose a location to tell a story about a new chair, or making the packaging, or other details, to kind of build this whole experience around a product.”
Color is an essential element of these stories, and the juxtaposition of the vibrant blue against various brick shades really appealed to her. “I’m very interested in color and how color can affect people, including their moods.” she explains. “Color is so subjective, and people interpret it in different ways. One color makes one person calm, and it has a different effect on someone else. I think that’s very interesting.”
Selma wanted a backyard space that was beautiful yet sturdy, picturesque yet able to hold up under the stream of loved ones gathering there to eat, talk, laugh, and spend time together. “It’s such a nice source of inspiration to look at things that grow and change color, and to have that right outside of your home office,” she says of the courtyard. “I feel very lucky to have that.”
