Jermall Charlo has thoroughly enjoyed his time as a dominant champion. However, due to both personal reasons and a nagging back injury, the WBC middleweight belt holder was forced to watch his contemporaries from the sidelines. As the 32-year-old begins gearing up for his return, he’s made his feelings well-known that a showdown against Canelo Alvarez is still incredibly important to him. In fact, with Alvarez ostensibly calling the shots should the two engage in negotiations, Charlo recently revealed that he would have no issue with giving him the home-field advantage.
Charlo’s willingness to pack his bags and head to Mexico was music to the ears of Eddy Reynoso, trainer of the pound-for-pound star. Ultimately, if talks between both camps pick up, Reynoso won’t forget what Charlo said.
“Well hopefully he would love to come to Mexico,” said Reynoso to Little Giant Boxing.
At the moment, a showdown against Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) is the furthest thing from Alvarez’s mind. With his 2022 campaign failing to go according to plan, revenge is a must for the Mexican star.
On May 6th, in Alvarez’s hometown, he’ll look to take out his frustrations on current WBO super middleweight interim titlist, John Ryder. As long as a victory is tallied, Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 KOs) will attempt to lure Dmitry Bivol back into the ring after failing to put a dent in his defensive armor last year.
While his 2023 schedule might be a bit busy, that doesn’t mean that Charlo is completely out of the loop. Of course, the Houston native has to somewhat re-establish himself before eventually moving up to the super middleweight division. But all in all, Reynoso is confident that he’ll do just that.
Although the esteemed trainer couldn’t give a concrete date in terms of when their showdown could take place, he reiterates that a matchup between them is incredibly salient.
“It’s a fight that is important and a fight we want to make.”
