Errol Spence Jr. might be known as one of the more successful pugilistic stars in recent times but in the mind of Tim Bradley, the current unified champion at 147 pounds is nothing more than a track star.
“Man, Errol Spence is running from (Terence) Crawford,” said Bradley to Fight Hub TV. “He running like a son of a gun. That’s the only fight that you said you wanted, that’s the fight that you said you were gonna deliver to the fans after you won the three titles. It’s been a long time. You straight up lied.”
For the newly inducted Hall of Famer, he’s attempted to wait patiently for both champions to square off. Although they’ve continued to hurl verbal jabs at one another, Spence has said in years past that facing Crawford is essentially his end game. With the Omaha, Nebraska, native attached to Bob Arum’s Top Rank until recently, Spence believed that it simply made more sense to take care of business on his side of the promotional street.
While it may have taken longer than he would have liked, Spence (28-0, 22 KOs) eventually aggregated the WBC, WBA, and IBF welterweight titles. Shortly after forcing Yordenis Ugas into the surgery room, Spence audaciously addressed Crawford, claiming that he’ll violently strip his longtime rival of his WBO title in short order.
Ultimately though, Crawford threw up his hands in frustration as he pointed a blaming finger in the direction of team Spence. In the immediate aftermath, Crawford made quick work of David Avanesyan, stopping the fringe contender in six rounds. Spence, on the other hand, sifted through countless welterweight names. And while he could have opted to defend his unified throne, he appears on the verge of taking on Keith Thurman at 154 pounds.
News of their looming showdown took Bradley by surprise. In addition to Spence promising the public that a matchup against Crawford is the only one that he desires at 147 pounds, Bradley points to Jermell Charlo, Spence’s good friend, and current undisputed champion at 154.
“How the hell you gonna go up to 54 and then come back down to 147 pounds to face Crawford? Isn’t one of your brothers that’s in camp with you at 54 as well? You just going up there for what? Thurman can’t make the weight or is it you that can’t make the weight? Maybe it’s both of y’all can’t make the weight.”
At the moment, it’s unknown if Spence will relinquish his three welterweight titles and campaign moving forward at the junior middleweight limit. Regardless of his final decision, Bradley has become incredulous about the entire ordeal. While the boxing world is littered with countless mouthwatering bouts, Bradley reveals that he won’t be placated with any other substitute.
“The fight we been waiting on is Crawford and Spence.”
